Studying for the Cosmetology Theory Exam

To be a cosmetologist, you need to excel at working with clients and have a thorough understanding of the theories behind cosmetology. Before you can begin your career as a cosmetologist, you must pass a written test to qualify for your license. The best first step to take when preparing for the cosmetology theory exam is to enroll in a beauty school in the state you plan on practicing in. Make sure you complete all of your assignments, and pay extra attention to areas that prove to be particularly challenging for you. You can start a study group with some of your classmates to share your notes and experiences, and to quiz each other on what you’ve learned. Find sample exams to practice with once you feel almost ready for the real thing, and go over your answers to see where you still could use some improvement.

Long Island Beauty School provides our students with classroom instruction as well as hands-on experience for a well-rounded foundation in cosmetology. Contact us at (516) 483-6259 to learn about the admissions process and to inquire about whether you might qualify for financial aid.

Caring for Color-Treated Hair in the Spring and Summer

There’s a good chance that you know the sun can damage skin through intense or prolonged exposure—that’s why you tell your clients to wear sunscreen on a daily basis. However, how are your clients supposed to care for their hair in the summer? Color-treated hair is especially susceptible to being damaged by sun and water at the beach or poolside, so it needs special attention to keep it healthy and beautiful. Keep reading to learn how to care for color-treated hair in the spring and summer months.

Shampooing Options
While shampooing your hair with a foamy lather every day can feel quite refreshing, it can also strip your hair of the vital oils it needs to retain the color. If you decide not to shampoo every day, you should still rinse your hair with warm water and use a conditioner so that your dry strands get the moisture they need. On the days you do shampoo, try to use as little as possible for the best color retention. You can also try oil-absorbing hair powders and avoid water altogether on some days to promote long-lasting color.

Protein Treatments
Many of your hairstyling clients may have never given thought to what their hair is actually made of. Hair is made of a tough protein called keratin, but it can be damaged when it is color-treated. This damage must be addressed so that the sun and water don’t do additional harm to the hair’s structure. Glazing hair after a color treatment will help fight that damage and seal in the color so that it lasts longer and is not as vulnerable to sun and water.

SPF Hair Conditioner
You use sunscreen with SPF on your skin, and there are leave-in conditioners designed to protect your hair, as well. Use one of these and wear a floppy sunhat whenever you’re expecting to spend a good amount of time in the sun.

When your clients are happy with their hair, they’ll be happy with you. Long Island Beauty School is here to provide you with a solid education and hands-on experience so you can have a prosperous career in the cosmetology and hairdressing industry. Top Makeup Looks for Summer Weather

Summer is finally here again, which means it’s time to put away your snow boots, down parkas, and sweaters and bring out your sandals, sundresses, and shades. You change what you wear with the season, so you should also think about how your future cosmetology clients will want to change their makeup for the warmer weather. Summer is a time to be fun and flirty when it comes to makeup, so keep reading to learn about a few of the best makeup looks for summer weather.

Blue Eyes
Whether your client has naturally blue eyes or a shade of brown or green, you can use blue eyeliner for a fresh, summery look. Instead of using a bright blue eyeliner across the entire length of the eyelid, only apply it on the outer half so that the eye remains bright. The outer corners should flick upwards for a winged look that’s equally at home in a sidewalk café or out to dinner at a fine restaurant.

Pink Lips
You certainly don’t want your clients to be pink with sunburn from a day at the beach, but you can incorporate pink into their summer makeup looks with a simple lip gloss and pencil. Use the lip gloss first for an understated, natural shine, and then fill in the lips with a pink or nude pencil. This is a perfect look for a day at the beach or attending a pool party at a friend’s summer house. Remember to have your clients bring the gloss and pencil with them in case they need touchups.

Golden Glow
While a suntan can look great, it’s best to advise your clients to get a golden glow from makeup so they don’t damage their skin. Bronze eye shadow blended with a softer gold hue can create a fresh-from-the-beach look, especially when the glow is extended to the cheeks with bronzer.

Keeping Hair Hydrated In the Summer

Warm weather and sunshine might feel good, but they can also strip your hair of moisture. If you want to keep luscious, healthy locks during the summer, use the following tips to maintain hydration.

Use a deep conditioner once a week to replenish moisture in the hair. Moisturizing shampoo is also a useful resource that can give you the hair you want. Brush your hair at least twice a day to spread the oil down through the strands. Let your tresses dry naturally to avoid stripping them of even more moisture. A healthy diet can also improve the look and feel of your hair.

Education and Exams
One way to get your license is to prove that you have finished your schooling and taken and passed all of your exams. If you do your program in the state of New York, you can take a practical exam after graduation to get your license. If you went to school out of state, you can prove this with your school certificate, your transcript listing all of your completed hours, and a certificate from the state board showing that you have completed these courses.

Five Years of Out-of-State Experience
If you have already been working as a cosmetologist in another state for at least five years, you can submit your license as well as two statements from employers or co-workers that verify your experience. You will also need a copy of your tax returns to prove that you have been working as a cosmetologist.

Renewing a Previously Held License
New York State cosmetology licenses expire if a person does not file an application and pay the renewal fee once the license has expired. If you let your previous license lapse, you can take another written exam to reinstate it and continue working in the beauty industry in New York.
