Contouring is the perfect way to give your clients the structured cheekbones
they want, but done incorrectly, it can create a look that is more cringe
than chiseled. In
makeup school, you’ll practice tips for creating the perfect contour for your
clients. As you master your skills, avoid these common mistakes that could
compromise your contouring abilities:
Using the Wrong Color
Although using a contouring makeup that is a few shades darker than your
client’s natural skin tone is required to create the dramatic, high-cheekbone
look you want, going too dark will lead to unnatural results. Avoid the
temptation to use bronzer beneath the cheekbones, as it will look too
orange. Instead, opt for a makeup product that was specifically created
for contouring in a color that is about two shades darker than your client’s
skin. Put it beneath the cheekbones, and then add bronzer only in areas
where the sun would naturally hit the face.
Overusing Contouring Makeup
When celebrities are photographed with contoured makeup, they need to use
a substantial amount of products so that the effect is noticeable in the
picture. For real life circumstances, however, your clients don’t
need such a heavy hand. Avoid creating harsh lines with contouring products
that won’t blend in naturally. Generally, most people look best
with contouring makeup under their cheekbones only, rather than also creating
lines on the nose, unless you are doing makeup specifically for a photo shoot.
Being Heavy Handed with Highlighter
Highlighter is a finishing touch to enhance contouring, not the star of
the show. When you apply too much of it, you’ll draw attention to
the sparkle and away from the contour you worked to create. Apply a small
amount of highlighter to the tops of the cheekbones only, to preserve
the contouring shadow and to avoid excessive shininess.
